Curing the Problem
Many dog owners just make the barking problem worse by rewarding their dog when the barking stops; of course, this kind of negative attention is only a short-term fix. A dog must understand that barking is not suitable conduct and will not be tolerated, nor rewarded, in any way. When the dog owner responds to the barking issue by screaming at the dog, the owner is simply giving the dog attention which encourages the behavior, even though your response is negative. Allowing a barking dog to come inside, also sustains the bad behavior, and you can expect that your response will cause the barking to persist and worsen. Comforting a barking dog or giving it a doggy treat to quiet it down is yet another way of reinforcing a dog barking problem, which is not going to stop.
Problem barking can be corrected through several dog training techniques. One technique involves remaining indifferent to the barking when he starts up at the doorbell or ringing telephone. When the doorbell or telephone rings, a dog owner needs to remain where they are and not respond in any way, thus indicating to the dog that they should not be anxious or alert about those noises. You can help the dog become accustomed to these noises by ringing them frequently while you are in the process of training the dog, and he will soon learn that these noises do not require a response.
There are also methods for stopping dog barking problems that occur when the owner is away from the house. The first way is to be sure your dog has always had plenty of exercise and is surrounded by enough toys, which will keep it busy and calm. There's also a special way of dealing with a dog that barks when its owner is gone: when the owner gets back home he shouldn't greet the dog immediately, but instead wait until the animal has calmed down considerably. Bark collars or loud sounds are acceptable negative responses to use when your dog is barking, and praise should be given when he is not barking.
